Ecocert explained
Ecocert is an originally French certification company for organic certification that was founded in 1991. The company certifies food, products, cosmetics, detergents, perfumes, textiles, but also social responsibility and fair trade in over 110 countries. This makes Ecocert one of the largest organic certification organizations in the world.
Ecocert organic cosmetics certification follows 3 important principles:
- Ecocert verifies the origin of each ingredient, requiring the use of at least 95% natural ingredients. The manufacturing process is also taken into account.
- The use of ingredients from organic farming. In the case of organic cosmetics, for example, 95% of the plant-based ingredients in the formulation and at least 10% of the total ingredients should come from organic farming.
- Ingredients must be clearly declared to provide consumers with clear information.
All brand owners or manufacturers who wish to use the Ecocert logo on their products must be inspected and certified by Ecocert. The Ecocert name and logo are internationally registered and protected trademarks.

History of Ecocert
The predecessor of Ecocert was the French producers' association A.C.A.B. (Association des Conseillers en Agriculture Biologique), which was founded in 1978. In 1991, the producers' association spun off as an independent inspection organization. From 1992, the organization began partnerships in some European countries, including Belgium, Germany and Portugal. Gradually, its reach was extended worldwide. Offices were set up around the world, followed by subsidiaries, such as in Brazil and Canada in 2002. Since 2006, Ecocert has also been represented in China.
Good to know about Ecocert
Have you ever wondered why it says COSMOS on our Ecocert labels? Well, over the last years, 5 main organizations have emerged in the world that certify natural and organic cosmetics. These include Ecocert, among others. To close the gap between the different regulations of the five organizations, the COSMOS Standard was founded in 2010. The aim was to maintain a control and certification process for organic and natural products to ensure a level competition for businesses, clarity and confidence for consumers, and effective progress towards sustainable development. Cosmos has thus created uniform standards that are internationally accepted for natural, and organic cosmetics.
